Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

If you are nervous about visiting the dentist or concerned about feeling uncomfortable during minor dental procedures, you may benefit from nitrous oxide. Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” this mild sedation method helps create a calming effect for patients during their appointments. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option for both children and adults and has no harmful after effects.

Who Benefits from Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is generally recommended for healthy patients who have the following conditions or concerns:

Anxiety or fear about the dentist
desire to reduce awareness during visit
minimize stress and discomfort
need assistance sitting still
control sensitive gag reflex
fear of needles

How Nitrous Oxide Works?

Nitrous oxide is a mixture of a tasteless, odorless sedative gas and oxygen that is breathed in through a mask worn over your nose. This type of sedation does not require our patients to take anxiety medication before their appointment or endure an IV sedation method. While you are breathing in the nitrous oxide, you will be fully conscious and able to take directions from our dentist. However, you will feel extremely calm and relaxed, and completely free from fear, anxiety, or stress. Once the procedure is complete and the mask removed, the effects of the nitrous oxide will start to wear off immediately.
